Norfolk, sometimes called “The Navy Capital”, is the second largest incorporated city in Virginia and has a population of over 230,000 (2000 census). It’s part of the Hampton Roads area, which was named for the natural harbor that carries the same title found at Chesapeake Bay. The Hampton Roads metro area consists of seven counties that have a total of nine cities; the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC MSA. Norfolk is a historically rich area, specifically in the areas of transportation and strategic points for the military. In fact, the Norfolk Naval Base located here is the world’s largest base of its kind. Norfolk is also home to the Norfolk Southern Railway’s headquarters. Beach lovers love the Norfolk area because it is lined with multiple waterfronts, riverfronts, and bays. Traveling to and from Norfolk from surrounding areas is done by a large variety of bridges, interstate highways, tunnels, and even bridge-tunnels. Avid fans of history and military will also not want to pass up an opportunity to visit the Norfolk area. A must if this is you, is a visit to the Hampton Roads Naval Museum and the Douglas MacArthur Memorial.

One of the most popular attractions found in Norfolk is the National Maritime Center, or Nauticus. There are many oceanography exhibits to explore. You can learn about the National Maritime Sanctuaries, which are underwater parks that they maintain. Want to pet a real shark? No problem. The Shark Touch exhibit lets you do just that. In fact, you can get your hands on a variety of ocean life at the Touch Tank, such as horseshoe crabs, starfish, and more.
