Richmond, Virginia is a place where you can delight yourself with fine dining, take a leisurely ride down a gently flowing river, spend a day of adventure at a theme park, or visit historical Civil War battlegrounds. Richmond is also home to many beautiful outdoor parks and recreational areas that you’ll be able to enjoy.

In fact, Richmond has one of the oldest municipal park systems found anywhere in the nation. It all started with Monroe Park, which was 7.5 acres of land that the city voted to purchase in 1851. Now it’s only part of the park system here, being one of at least 40 parks that cover an astonishing 1,500 acres. Here are only a few of these wonderful, family-friendly Richmond-area parks to visit. If you enjoy hiking you’ll like the James River Parks System. If you are a mountain biker, then you’ll absolutely fall in love with it. There are numerous trails, and you can stop at scenic overlooks where you’ll get picture perfect views of the city. The trails are so highly respected that the Xterra East Championship, an off-road triathlon, uses it for the mountain biking and running sections of the race. If history is your thing, then you don’t want to miss the park area on Belle Isle. This is an extraordinary sight to see, with many historical places you can still observe today. It has been home to a colonial-era horse track, a Powhatan fishing village, and even a Civil War prison camp. History lovers will feel right at home, seeing things like an old arms storage unit that was used in the Civil War prison camp. There are also rock climbing lessons at the cliff and bike trails found throughout this area in Richmond.

For an adventurous, theme park day, Kings Dominion and Bush Gardens are near Richmond, Virginia as well.
